Corrosion protection for aluminium components

Aggressive ambient conditions especially near coasts, but also for example in indoor swimming pools, may cause filiform corrosion between the coating film and the surface of aluminium components. The quality of the aluminium alloy is not a decisive factor here. Filiform corrosion occurs more on cut edges or next to damage of the coating film. Corrosion pitting with a depth of just a few ┬Ám does not affect the statics of the component but is visually unacceptable.

To protect against filiform corrosion, pre-anodisation, an open-pore oxide layer, is often recommended as a pre-treatment for aluminium workpieces to be coated. As this is only offered by a few specialist companies, two-coat corrosion applications with IGP powder systems represent a useful alternative.
